He'll Make a Way
My new book, Motor City at War, spends a fair amount of time in church. A Black Baptist church in Detroit, to be precise. This song was written in 1941 by the Reverend Thomas Dorsey, who played barrelhouse piano under the stage name of Georgia Tom before he saw the light and began to compose some of the most beautiful songs in the gospel repertoire. This song matters a lot to my character Azulee. The best version I’ve heard is the by the Soul Stirrers, back when Sam Cooke was a member of the group.
