Ambrose Byrd has been a soldier since the Civil War and it’s damaged him, heart and soul. Now he’s done with fighting. When he settles in the all-Black town of Willow Bend, Mississippi, he thinks he’s found a place where he can make peace—with the past and with himself.

But he walks into trouble instead.

The people of Willow Bend are under threat. The white planter who sold them their land wants it back—and he’s willing to use the Klan to get it.

Byrd thought he was done with being a soldier. But the people of Willow Bend have a battle on their hands. Will he join them to fight once more—to protect Willow Bend and put his past to rest?
